Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

OCI landing zones, migration and operations, built to your security and compliance requirements.

What is it?

Designing and running workloads on OCI: the landing zone, network and identity design, migration of existing workloads, and the operational practice afterwards. Particularly where Oracle workloads need to sit close to the rest of the estate.

For a technical reader

The landing zone is the decision that is hardest to revisit: compartment hierarchy, identity domain design, tagging and network topology all become load-bearing once workloads arrive. OCI's compartment model gives genuinely useful isolation boundaries for policy and cost, but only if the hierarchy reflects how you will actually govern. Network design should assume hybrid connectivity from the start, because retrofitting FastConnect and routing around an existing VCN layout is considerably harder than planning for it.

Identity
Identity domains, federation to your IdP, and least-privilege policy design
Network
VCN topology, gateways, load balancing and FastConnect to on-premises
Database

Resilience
Cross-availability-domain and cross-region backup and disaster recovery, tested
Cost governance
Budgets, quotas and tag-based showback by team or application

Business problems we solve

Cloud spend is rising without explanationUsually no tagging discipline and no rightsizing review. Both are far cheaper to establish early than to retrofit.
Security posture is unclearA defined baseline with drift detection replaces the assumption that it was set up correctly once.
DR exists on paper onlyAn untested plan is a document. We rehearse recovery and record the results.
Oracle workloads sit awkwardly elsewhereOracle databases and applications often run better and more economically on OCI, though we will say when that is not the case.

Our delivery approach

  1. 01
Design the landing zoneCompartments, identity, network segmentation and guardrails defined before the first workload arrives. Retrofitting this is expensive.
  2. 02
Classify before migratingEach workload assessed for rehost, re-platform or rebuild. Not everything deserves the same treatment.
  3. 03
Migrate in wavesLowest-risk workloads first, so the process is proven before anything critical moves.
  4. 04
Operate with cost visibilityTagging and budget alerts from the start. Cloud cost discipline is much harder to add later.

Solutions & project types

Examples of the work we take on in this area. These describe project shapes, not named client engagements.

Greenfield landing zoneA governed foundation with compartments, policy and network ready for the first workload.
Database migration to AutonomousMoving an on-premises Oracle database with a tested cutover and rollback.
Hybrid connectivityFastConnect and routing between on-premises data centres and OCI.
Cross-region disaster recoveryA tested DR configuration meeting a defined recovery objective.

Where to start with oracle cloud infrastructure.

Secondary to the work itself, but genuinely useful if you are building the skill. Every link goes to official documentation or an official channel.

Beginner

  • OCI regions, availability domains and fault domains
  • Compartments and how policy inheritance works
  • Launch a compute instance and reach it securely
  • VCN basics: subnets, gateways, route tables
  • Read an IAM policy statement

Intermediate

  • Identity domains and federation to an external IdP
  • Terraform via Resource Manager
  • Autonomous Database provisioning and scaling
  • Load balancing and high availability patterns
  • Monitoring, logging and alarms

Advanced

  • Landing zone architecture at enterprise scale
  • FastConnect and hybrid routing design
  • Cross-region DR with data replication
  • Security Zones and Cloud Guard policy
  • Cost governance: quotas, budgets, showback

Certifications

  • Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Foundations Associate

Practice projects

  • Build a compartment hierarchy and write least-privilege policies for it
  • Define a VCN with public and private subnets entirely in Terraform
  • Provision an Autonomous Database and connect privately to it
  • Set up budgets and tag-based cost reporting per team
  • Rehearse a cross-region failover and record the timings
FAQs

Questions we get asked.

Why OCI rather than AWS or Azure?

Mostly where Oracle databases and applications are central: licensing, Exadata availability and proximity to Fusion applications can make a real difference. For a general-purpose workload with no Oracle estate, the case is weaker and we will say so.

Can we run multi-cloud?

Yes, and many organisations do, with the Oracle estate on OCI and other workloads elsewhere. Interconnect between OCI and Azure exists specifically for this.

How do we control cost?

Tagging, budgets and quotas from the start, with a monthly rightsizing review. Retrofitting cost discipline after a year of untagged resources is much harder.

Is the landing zone really necessary first?

Yes. Compartment and network structure become difficult to change once workloads depend on them. It is the cheapest thing to get right early.
